Schools have been actively involved in Eco Challenge since April 2008 and the case studies below give you information on how schools are using the Eco Challenge funding to the benefit of their students including criteria for selection, year group and how the residential course is integrated with the post course activities.
If you have a case study or report which would be of interest to other schools please email ecochallenge@field-studies-council.org so that we can update and improve the information that we share with all schools involved in this exciting project.

Kings Manor School, Middlesbrough
Residential – Malham Tarn
Imagine being taken into the darkness, in a strange place, in silence where all you can hear are your own footsteps and the eerie noises from night time creatures – this is exactly what Kings Manor did on their second night at Malham. After a few worries about the lack of light and the unknown and eyes adjusting to the darkness, the students listened for animals and investigated the moth trap for the night catch! In the nearby woods they completed the nightline activity – following a rope course blindfolded using vocal commands to build their teamwork skills.
'The students really enjoyed this activity, finding it both challenging and exciting. They were surprised at how much they could see when it was so dark initially'' Tutor leading the Eco Challenge course at Malham Tarn
